Amazing Nature – Kamenjak
Kamenjak, the southernmost tip of the Istrian peninsula, is certainly one of the most attractive and most visited parts of the Medulin Riviera. It consists of Upper and Lower Kamenjak, but no matter which part of Kamenjak you go to, you’ll always be accompanied by the sea, unique scents of Mediterranean herbs and unforgettable views, as well as the view of the Medulin Archipelago and its eleven uninhabited islets. On clear days, you’ll be able to see the island of Cres and Velebit mountain in the distance.
Lower Kamenjak is one of the last oases on the coast that has retained its former appearance. It’s a mosaic of cultivated fields, pastures and green groves almost immersed in the sea. Once you reach Kamenjak, you can enjoy a variety of activities. You can always hike in Kamenjak and these hikes are always special, you can ride a bike along its well-maintained trails, you can row, swim, dive, go kayaking, jump into the sea… When winds blow, many windsurfers flock to Kamenjak because its winds are special. In the southernmost part of Istria, there is no building, no magnificent hotels, but in late spring and summer you can take some refreshment in one of the bars located right by the sea. A favourite place of many visitors is the Safari Bar, but the Istrian Farm is another great attraction.
Lower Kamenjak is a peninsula that stretches over 404 hectares, it is about nine kilometres long with the coastline stretching for as many as 30 kilometres. There are numerous coves and beaches immersed in the crystal clear sea, all of them beautiful but diverse.
From Cape Kamenjak you will surely catch sight of the Porer lighthouse, built on the rock of the same name in 1846, as well as of the islet of Fenoliga, where dinosaurs once walked and whose footprints can still be seen today. The areas with dinosaur fossils on the islet of Fenoliga and Cape Grakalovac are designated protected areas. Orchids are also protected, and as many as 30 species of these beautiful flowering plants grow here.
Although most visitors come during the summer months, you should definitely visit Kamenjak in spring or autumn to experience true pleasures of its untouched nature.
Upper Kamenjak, although less visited, is a beautiful part of the Medulin Riviera, located between Premantura and Volme. It is a designated significant landscape with as many as 487 different plant species. If you head to Upper Kamenjak, you will surely enjoy the local hiking and biking trails. It’s an opportunity to breathe in the real scent of the Mediterranean, just like in Lower Kamenjak, and take a break from everyday rush and stress.
